FAQs
What training do naturopathic doctors have?
Naturopathic doctors have an undergraduate degree that fulfilled pre-medical requirements. They then go on to become a doctor of naturopathic medicine in a 4 year (minimum) program from an accredited institution and undergo a 2 year residency-like clinical internship. Successful completion of provincial and North American board exams are required for licensure.
How is a naturopathic doctor different from a medical doctor?
Both are regulated health professionals. Both have extensive post-graduate training and likely have a similar undergraduate education. Medical doctors practice a style of medicine called allopathy. Often this looks like finding interventions that have the opposite effect of the problematic symptom Ex. anti-hypertension medications for high blood pressure or anti-histamines for allergies. Naturopathic doctors use a set of tools and philosophies to remove barriers to healing and to stimulate the natural healing capacity of the body. In short, both naturopathic doctors and medical doctors are regulated health care professionals; they practice medicine differently. At THCL we believe there is value in both systems.
Are naturopathic doctors regulated health professionals?
Yes. ‘Naturopathic doctor’, ‘naturopath’, ‘naturopathy’ and ‘ND’ are all protected titles in Ontario. This means that to hold such a title one must be registered with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO). The role of the college is to protect the public by various legal requirements, standards and investigations. Naturopathic doctors are regulated by the same legislature as other regulated healthcare professionals, namely, the Regulated Health Professions Act.
What are the advantages of having a naturopathic doctor?
Naturopathic doctors offer lifestyle driven medicine that identifies and removes obstacles to healing. Envision client-doctor interactions that take a detailed approach, identifying root-cause, and answering wide-ranging questions to offer informed choice and effective solutions. In essence, naturopathy empowers clients with information and practices to create their own health. We think that is pretty advantageous.
What about “woo-woo”, “snake oil” and Hogwarts?
Naturopathic medicine considers the whole person. This includes mental, emotional, physical and spiritual variables. We believe in your natural healing capacity. We work with tools that honour and leverage energy in the body. We help people develop their intuition and we use intuition in our practice. We also practice evidence informed medicine: a balance of clinical experience, patient values and evidence. Our approach is integrative, functional and wholistic.
